BALTIMORE, Maryland, July 24, 2018 –Synagro Technologies, Inc., the preeminent provider of biosolids and residuals solutions services in the United States since 1986, yesterday formally commissioned the digesters at its in-vessel bioconversion facility on Sand Island, a small island within the city of Honolulu, Hawaii. Honolulu’s Mayor Kirk Caldwell joined members of the Synagro team and others to mark the occasion with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“Since the completion of the Synagro in-vessel bioconversion facility at the Sand Island Wastewater Treatment Plant in 2006, the City and County of Honolulu (CCH) has experienced significant benefits including a 99 percent decrease in landfill disposal of the SIWWTP’s biosolids and achievement of the CCH’s goal of minimizing the need to expand Oahu’s landfill,” explained Nick Caggiano, regional vice president, West, Synagro. “The biosolids are now converted into a commercial-grade, Class A “Exceptional Quality” fertilizer product for agricultural and commercial use on the island, moving Honolulu even closer to its long-term sustainability goal.”

The facility utilizes renewable biogas, which displaces approximately 5,500 barrels of oil per year and reduces the island’s dependence on imported fossil fuels.

“The City and County of Honolulu (CCH) faces the constant challenge of expanding and improving the collection, treatment, disposal and recycling of its waste materials,” said Mayor Caldwell. “In 2002, we entered into a public-private partnership with Synagro to design, build and operate an in-vessel bioconversion facility that includes digestion, dewatering, drying and pelletization. Today’s ribbon-cutting marks a renewed commitment on behalf of CCH and Synagro to be more sustainable and resilient by completing new infrastructure at the Sand Island Wastewater Treatment Plant.”

As an active member of Honolulu’s business community, Synagro is committed to its continuing partnership with the CCH to provide an environmentally safe and beneficial reuse solution for biosolids management on Oahu.
