Since the days of the outhouse, adding alkaline materials to waste has been a time tested approach to creating beneficial products safely and efficiently. Today, advanced alkaline stabilization processes remain widespread and offer the flexibility to meet U.S. EPA 40 CFR Part 503 Class A or Class B pathogen reduction standards.
Synagro’s BIO*FIX® system is a proprietary alkaline stabilization process which uses quicklime (CaO) to treat biosolids prior to beneficial use.
The BIO*FIX Class A process is characterized by an increase in pH and temperature that meets environmental and public health standards established by federal, state, and local regulations associated with the end-product use. The process effectively controls odors, inactivates pathogenic microorganisms and prevents vector attraction.
The BIO*FIX process delivers numerous advantages:
- One system can easily produce Class A or Class B end-products with simple adjustments to lime dose
- Long-term stability of end-products
- Small footprint for the processing facility
- Low capital and operation cost
- Low process water requirements
- Very low energy requirements
- Excellent control over odor reduction and stability requirements to meet increasing landfill requirements for accepting sewage sludge
- Full compliance with stringent environmental and public health standards
Stabilized Class B product is an excellent choice for agricultural land application or mine reclamation. The Class A end-product is typically marketed as an agricultural lime substitute, a soil amendment, or for daily/final landfill cover.
For Class B products, SYNAGRO:
- Deploys mobile units for emergency stabilization needs, including pond or digester cleanouts
- Maintains permanent installations to meet increasing landfill requirements for accepting sludge
- Produces stabilized Class B product for land applications
- Meets odor reduction and stability requirements to satisfy increasing landfill compliance for sewage sludge
For Class A products, SYNAGRO:
- Produces products for a lime substitute, soil amendment, mine reclamation, or landfill cover
