Scholarships Advance Protection and Enhancement of the Water Environment and Nurture Future Industry Growth

BALTIMORE, Maryland, February 14, 2018 – Synagro Technologies, Inc., the preeminent provider of biosolids and residuals solutions services in the United States since 1986, in partnership with the Hawai’i Water Environment Association (HWEA), is excited to announce Nicholas Babcock, a civil engineering major at Northern Arizona University, and Rachel Yonamine, a civil engineering major at Oregon State University, as the recipients of $3,000 HWEA/Synagro Scholarships, of which HWEA provided $1,000 each and Synagro provided $2,000 each.

Offered to college students pursuing degrees related engineering, public health, or natural sciences (e.g. biology, chemistry, geology, microbiology, oceanography, physics, etc.), as related to the protection and enhancement of the water environment and associated public health, the scholarship provides financial assistance to HWEA members and their dependents seeking higher education, and to encourage academic excellence.

“HWEA is very proud to partner with Synagro, to offer these scholarships,” said Jayson Tasaka, Student Affairs co-chair, R.M. Towill Corporation. “Their donation goes to the HWEA Student Affairs Committee. The goal of this Committee is to encourage academic and social excellence and to develop and manage a financial assistance program for HWEA members and their dependents in their quest for higher education and professional development.”

“It’s important that we invest in students because they will be influential in the industry in the years to come,” said Melissa Carmichael, plant manager, Honolulu, Hawaii, Synagro. “At Synagro, we are committed to identifying and equipping future leaders with the tools they need to succeed. The HWEA/Synagro Scholarship is just one of several ways that Synagro supports science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education initiatives worldwide.”
